Student Magazine
Central Piedmont publishes a yearly arts & literature magazine to showcase student work. Students from various art programs of the college are eligible to submit their work for feature in the magazine. Our team worked to design the layout, curate the artwork, and create the visual identity for this periodical. Objectives were to design page layouts for the following:

Overview
Research
The Hammer combines the work from literature and fine arts into one magazine. The challenge was to represent both by distilling each down to a fundamental idea.
Sketches explored college landmarks, abstract geometry, and typographic image, and considered the idea of a universal experience shared among all artists. Such experience is the emergence of an idea. New ideas can begin as hand-drawn sketches or, in the case of literature, as words and phrases.
Covers
Hand-drawn words and imagery encapsulate the essence of creativity shared by both fine arts and literature.
Digital illustrations fill the front cover. The illustrations have a hand-drawn doodle style to allude the creative imagination that artists across all art forms experience. The back cover represents the moment before creativity strikes, when a blank page awaits for the artist's inspiration.

Body
A monochromatic palette of cool, green hues creates a soft and approachable look that when paired with a dark, high contrast blue hue allows the colors to stand apart from each other.
The usage of Space Grotesk as the main heading font is compelling, but not overpowering, and is grounded by the more traditional Garamond used in the body copy.
